The field of medicine has never been neutral. As healthcare professionals, our daily goal should be nothing short of curing the world. That involves more than simply applying band-aids. That involves addressing the underlying causes of human suffering on our planet and speaking out on behalf of those who’s voices have been silenced. The language of Global Medicine is one that speaks volumes, not only about the different ways in which we suffer, but more importantly, about the ways that we combine our collective strength, knowledge, compassion, and will to transform this world into a better place. Pure idealism you say? I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes on the topic by a humanitarian that lived his ideals and made his life his strongest argument.
“The power of ideals is incalculable. We see no power in a drop of water. But let it get into a crack in the rock and be turned to ice, and it splits the rock; turned into steam, it drives the pistons of the most powerful engines. Something has happened to it which makes active and effective the power that is latent in it.” -Albert Schweitzer.
